Smoke from a fireworks show combined with moisture on a warmish July night to form a cloud of smog, which drifted northward from Capitol Lake on Budd Inlet. In this photo, the rising Moon can be seen.

I was leaving Media Island after a meeting for the radio station KOWA 106.5 LP FM. KOWA meeetings happen on Mondays, at 6pm, at Media Island, 816 Adams St SE (right across from the downtown Olympia Timberland Regional Library.)

Olympia—I volunteered with EGYHOP. EGYHOP stands for Emma Goldman Youth Homeless Outreach Project.

It was a good experience. Very interesting. I think it's an important project. People need support.

I am thankful to my friend for asking me to help, and I look forward to learning more about the project, and about Olympia's homeless youth.

It's amazing how we have homelessness in society, considering the relative material prosperity enjoyed by some.

Enjoy the Moon.

Full Moon Tree Climb

Last night I climbed to the top of a giant sequoia tree. I have never climbed so high in a tree before. I have never been in a tree that is so perfect for climbing. This tree is probably about 60 feet tall, maybe more, and it's very healthy, with many similarly sized branches, which makes for a pretty easy climb. I don't know how old the tree is, but its leaves are very healthy, and it must be 6 or 8 feet in diameter at breast height. I would guess it's somewhere in the vicinity of 100 years old.

The Moon is full right now. Here's a photo of the moon from about half way up the tree.

The clouds are lit from beneath by city light - presumably from the Tacoma/Gig Harbor region of the Puget Sound. Interesting how pollution can actually cause incredibly beautiful scenes, sometimes.

What a special planet is this — this planet Earth...and with that big old moon going around — Wow!

Astounding to think of the planetary physics involved - and surely the moon has played in integral role in the development of life on Earth.

What a magical place, this planet Earth, with so much diverse life teeming about its surface.

I hope we can truly protect all life on Earth, and not squander the wealth of diversity...

(Did you know that there is currently a mass extinction in process - relating to human activities?)

Human beings are sacred. Part of that sacredness are the tremendous powers, which we bear: phsyical, emotional and mental (spiritual.)

Let's worship ourselves and each other, as the illumined beings we are - and recognize our power, our potential, our promise, and our responsibility.

Humanity has so much potential, it is sad to see the condition of humanity today. It is sad to see the destruction, the oppression, the exploitation (of Earth and each other), the violence, the various profligacies and tyrannies.

There is another way. I believe that humanity is capable of change. A world of peace, justice, sustainability, dignity and respect awaits.

Change begins within. Within the heart and mind of each one of us. Peace be with you on this journey.

Last Full Moon Before Bombardment

This will be the last Full Moon before the NASA and U.S. Government (if successful) bombard an impactor into the surface of the Moon. (ref: NASA LCROSS Mission)

I really wish my government wasn't engaged in this destructive scientific experiment.

The Moon is sacred to me. (So are all the planets. Including Earth. But the Earth is already so deeply affected by human activities - a few human-made bombs are just the tip of the ice-berg in terms of environmental destruction here.) I wish that the Moon would be kept clear and protected against this kind of experiment.

It wouldn't bother me as much if I knew that the results of such scientific endeavor - and any economic gains made as a result - would be shared equitably amongst all people. If the products and suggestions gained from such research were to be used to uplift all people, then I would not be so adamantly opposed to sending people into space.

However, in light of the intense poverty here amongst people on Earth, and in light of the growing gap between rich and poor (the gap is just astronomical) - I do not believe that it can be rationally justified to direct resources to projects such as this. No. It's just not right.

What I believe is that until all people are properly sheltered, nourished, educated and given equitable opportunity to participate in meaningful, non-oppressive (supporting, uplifting, life-serving), and sustainable economic systems - then it is wrong to spend money, energy, and other resources on space exploration (not to mention conquest nor dominance.)
